Who We Are

David and Martha Boyd started Federal Piping (FPI) in 1991 with minimal funds. David, with 10 years of trade experience working out of Local Union 131 NH, and the support and hard work of his wife Martha, a registered nurse from Massachussetts, they slowly built FPI to be a highly respected full-service plumbing and heating company in the Mount Washington Valley and Ossipee Valley.

A top 20 mechanical contractor in N.H., eventually hiring and training individuals in partnership with LU131, FPI became the plumbing, heating and piping company of choice for most major businesses in New Hampshire and Western Maine.

All our employees are special individuals who are dedicated to the customer service industry.

Every day and a lot of nights, you can find Federal Piping out and about keeping New Hampshire and Maine businesses operating. Our employees are some of the best around. They know what it takes to be an FPI employee. They love helping our business through some of the worst of times with plumbing emergencies as with heating and piping jobs. We can work with our commercial customers during off-hours making repairs and renovating for all types of customer needs. We are proud to be a top plumbing and heating contractor in New Hampshire. Our employees make an enormous contribution to the New Hampshire and Maine economies by keeping businesses running. We are proud of our employees who we train and can make that difference.

Plumbers will probably never get the recognition they deserve for helping our country maintain a safe and healthy environment. I put plumbers right up there with doctors, firemen and engineers. Our plumbers get called out at all hours of the night and day to help our customers with no heat, no water, frozen pipes in all weather conditions and make sure it’s done so no one gets hurt or sick from poor plumbing practices. Our work is taken for granted, until the next repair is needed.

Always hire a licensed plumber, even better an FPI plumber, to install, repair or renovate your plumbing or heating system. Never use a handyman who will put you and your family in jeopardy of getting sick or worse. Don’t be tempted by their cheaper cost.

History of Federal Piping Company, Inc.

1991 ~ It was all started by David & Martha Boyd with David and his training from the UA and Martha handling all the administrative work. David had a 1/2 ton Dodge pickup and a few power tools. He had a VISION!
After a few years of struggling with trying to break into a difficult area, Federal Piping landed its first meaningful job - a two week shut down for Malden Mills for repairs and pipe renovations. He kept on schedule.

1994 ~ Malden Mills liked FPI'S work for all its quality plumbing, piping and welding skills provided. FPI was asked to stay on for 5 years to provide all forms of maintenance support for their busy business until the unfortunate fire that destroyed their business which changed everything.

1996 ~ Landed a major contract with Seimen's Co., providing labor and material to convert a 4 story medical building at the Elliot Hospital in Manchester, NH, from electric heat to natural gas forced hot water with FPI completing work on schedule.
Broke ground on our first of many additions to our home office and pipe fabrication facility on the Maine and NH border.

1997 ~ Our first major job in the fabrication shop - a stainless steel fabrication job for North Conway Waste Treatment Facility. Completed a small and large bore pipe, fabbed up, delivered and installed by FPI.
Federal Piping completes a major plumbing renovation for the Mount Washington Hotel with a complete 3rd and 4th floor over 40 bath and kitchen renovation. Working with hotel management and staff to complete on time.
Landed a 2 week shut down with one of NH's largest and finest hotels, the North Conway Grand Hotel. Working nights replacing all domestic hot water 4" down to 1/2" copper mains in the mechanical room and hallways. This job started a good relationship that has lasted even until today.

1998 ~ Won the contract at Pease National Guard Air Base to supply labor and material for a Super Fund cleanup project with over 600 welds (1"-6") and over a mile of pipe. Pre-fabbed at our shop and installed on site.

2000 ~ Started a lasting relationship with a major food chain - Hannaford Bros. supplying plumbing, drain and hot water service throughout NH.

2001 ~ FPI's reputation for quality service helped land contracts and jobs for TJ Maxx/Marshalls, Rite Aids, Friendly's Restaurant, Ninety-Nine Restaurant, Applebee's, KFC, and Circle K-Irving throughout NH and ME.

2004 ~ Purchased a first for our area - Roto Brush HVAC Duct Cleaning equipment, to help supplement the HVAC Dept. is another first for FPI.

2005 ~ Created another lasting relationship with Memorial Hospital in N. Conway, NH providing plumbing, heating and drain cleaning support.

2007 ~ Landed a 2 year heat conversion job working under Seimen's Co., converting many Concord, NH city buildings to an efficient heating system. FPI provided plumbers, pipe fitters, welders and fire sprinkler fitters.

2008 ~ Purchased our first septic pumping truck to help expedite our drain cleaning service business. No more waiting days for a competitor to come and pump out customers backed up tank. Shortly after purchasing the septic pumping truck, FPI invested heavily into drain cleaning and being the first in Northern NH with color video, multiple jetter and steam blasting equipment.

2009 ~ Picked up our first school job. Today FPI provides services for over 13 local schools in NH and ME.

2011 ~ Over the years we've used subcontractors to dig our trenches and holes for all our underground piping jobs. We have now purchased our own excavator, skidsteer, 6 wheel dump truck and trailer to handle all our own trenching and dirt work to help expedite our customer's sewer and water repairs

2012 ~ Building Services starts a whole new division for Federal Piping Co., Inc. We can now provide carpentry services for any bathroom and/or kitchen remodels or repairs due to water damage due to freeze-ups or pipe leaks. FPI now offers our customers carpentry services along with our quality plumbing services.

2013 ~ Building Services division is doing so well, we located our carpentry services at our Stark Road annex in Conway, NH. Our pump repair business is also located at Stark Road, specializing in Goulds, but testing and repairing most brand names.

2014 ~ FPI is chosen to renovate the boiler room for the Sherman Adams Building (Observatory) on the summit of Mount Washington, bringing the existing system up to date and running much more efficient. What a View!!!

2015 ~ Hannaford Ossipee renovation Conway Wastewater Treatment Plant piping additions Berlin School conversion to low income housing

2016 ~ Reached a milestone of our first $2 Million for the year.

2017 ~ FPI handled over 2,400 service calls for residential and commercial customers with a 95% success rate and an 85% retention rate. It is projected that in 2018, FPI will handle over 2,700 service calls with our new employees and reputation for good plumbing and heating service.
For 2017, FPI had a 3 - 4 week wait during peak times. We hope to bring that down to half. 2017-2018 was a very cold winter season. We had to turn away over 100 new customer service calls because we made a promise to always service our loyal customers first. Loyalty goes both ways. With the building trades population aging and retiring, the demand for plumbers and pipefitters is great. For every 3 plumbers who retire, only 1 is filling the spot. I've invested in hiring and training 3 new employees so we can help more new customers who want our services in the future. It's a win-win for everyone.
FPI now has 7 service trucks covering New Hampshire and Maine. We have the manpower and knowledge for most commercial, industrial and residential jobs. We listen to our customers and their requests. We now install and service Water Right water treatment products to go with our water pump division.

2018 ~ We have over 15 service and specialty service trucks at your service. Now performing over 2500 service calls a year and close to 2 million in service.

2019 ~ Fall just finished the newest tourist attraction in the North Country, Story Land’s new aquarium life. Our plumbers successfully provided all the domestic plumbing for this new attraction. A 1 1/2 year project with over a mile of piping of all sizes used.
Our new 5000 sq. ft. Fabrication facility is now in operation. Designed to be a state of the art fabricating facility for commercial and industrial plumbing, pipefitting, welding and pump repairs. We now can be more efficient and provide better quality in a safe work environment. Prefabbing can help speed up down time to your operations. We are currently adding a second floor training room for our employees to help stay up to date in new procedures.
Federal Piping is now handling over 3000 service calls a year. We are looking to talk to and hire new recruits to help us grow and meet the demand for all the no heat, no water, leaks and drain cleaning service calls we take.
November 2019, Phase 2 of Hobbs Brewery begins. We are awarded the domestic plumbing and heating job.

2020 ~ Due to COVID-19, our commercial work is way off the projected mark. Residential is strong as of May/June for service and small renovations. Drain cleaning is busy, probably due to the virus. We have maintained our workforce.

October 2020 ~ As 2020 comes to a close I commend all of our Federal Piping employees, CSRs, plumbers, pipefitters, welders, heat and pump techs for their due diligence and not allowing the China Virus affect our busy operations. 2020 has been a mask-wearing year along with all the negative politics and civic unrest that has affected our nation's economy and health. All businesses are only as strong as their weakest link and Federal Piping does not have a weak link, only dedicated, hard-working professionals. I thank all of them.

Federal Piping has not missed an hour of work. Instead our service techs are averaging 10-20 hours overtime trying to keep all our loyal customers in operation. We've hired two pipefitter/welders to help in our FPIPF Fab Shop to pre-fabricate our area's biggest heat renovation at the Red Jacket Resort Water Park project. We are wrapping up the Hobbs Brewery project in Ossipee soon! After a delay due to the customer who put the job on hold due to the China Virus for a few weeks.
In 2020, we replaced a record number of electric hot water heaters, well pumps, well points, heat systems and small kitchen and bath renovations.

2020 Red Jacket Water Park Renovation Heat/DHW ~ 2020 was our best year ever since 1991. Our employees service techs and office staff get a big thank you for all they do. With our country in turmoil, elections, politics, China Virus, businesses and government closed down or working half capacity, our essential employees did great helping all our commercial and residential customers.

2021 ~ This is our 30th year anniversary. We are the oldest and biggest company in the Mount Washington Valley. We look forward to what is ahead.

And to all those who were our competition 30 years ago and said we’d never make it: Hey, here we are. Where are you? 11 full time employees, more than 3,000 service calls a year and still growing.

December 2021 ~ 2021 was not a better year. First we lost one of our founding members, friend and wife of David Boyd (President). Martha was with David from the start of the business. A full-time nurse R.N. (Lowell, MA) who stood by her husband through thick and thin of growing FPI to what it’s become. Martha was Vice President and Treasurer. Retired from nursing in 2018 and quickly after was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Like the lady we all knew, she didn’t give up without a fight. She will be missed, especially that smile.

The China Virus and the way our government handles it did not help business as usual. Overall, we took care of our loyal customers. Times like this proves how loyalty works. We apologize to the many potential customers who we had to turn away, stunting our growth. We still handled over 2,800 service calls.

Times like this prove governments cannot govern the people.

July 2022 ~ The halfway point of 2022 has been a record breaker of service and renovations. FPI has come to be the go-to company if you want to get the job done right and with the manpower. We’ve been keeping our plumbers, pipefitters, welders, pump and drain techs busy 7 days a week, almost 24 hours a day. Some of our customers have time restraints and working to their demands can be challenging. But over 30 years of serving all types of customers, FPI gets it done. Our employees are the hardest working pipefitters and plumbers around. Our local hospitals and nursing homes know it. Hannafords knows it. The North Conway Grand Hotel, Red Jacket and Holiday Inn know it. And you, the homeowner, knows it. When you’re good and prove it day and night, you can brag, and we can prove it.

FPI has taken on 4 new apprentices, men and women, who want a career in a great trade. These young people show a lot of promise for our industry. We have even reclaimed some commercial customers that thought cheaper was better. That did not go well and new we’re proud to have them back as a loyal commercial customer.

We’re training some new recruits in our apprenticeship program. It’s exciting to see young people progress and eventually become a go-to service tech we can all rely on. The future is promising for them and for FPI. We are constantly investing in people, tools and customer service.

December 2022 ~ FPI was honored to be able to help the Red Jacket Resort after their devastating fire in the Spring of 2022 to winterize their existing property on site (water park and hotel) probably the biggest winterization project in Northern NH. 4 men strong. Our plumbers, sprinkler fitters and heat techs, 2-week project and done before the temps dropped to freezing. Good job men, we hope to see the Red Jacket Resort back open soon.

Just finished a 6-month project for the North Conway Hannaford Refresh. Our crew worked evenings under the supervision of Fulcrum company to keep this amazing project on budget. No safety issues, no problems. Thanks to our high quality team of plumbers who are the professionals in every sense of the word. Union strong. American workers.

2022 was a very busy year with replacing many commercial water heaters for nursing homes, Hannaford stores in and all around New Hampshire.

We became a signatory plumbing and heating contractor with Local Union 716 Maine, along with our long-standing partnership with LU131 NH, to help provide us with quality UA workers for our expansion into Maine.

We replaced 3 very large boilers and domestic hot water systems for 3 different nursing homes in Berlin, NH with minimal disruption.

Ended on a high note! Over 3,300 service calls with a 96% satisfactory rate, Great job to my team. 2.1 million in service and sales. HB North Conway Refresh, a 5-month renovation, finished on time. 0 safety issues, full customer satisfaction.

2023 ~ We are introducing our newest Pooper Trooper fully-loaded commercial drain service truck, the Maverick. Sure to a be a head turner. We’re always investing back into our operations to better our services to our customers.

Experienced labor is hard to find these days in the trades. We are one of the few who is training the right individuals to be the next generation (to be certified, licensd and responsible). Safety will always be our focus to keep our customers and employees safe in 2023.

Our Pooper Trooper Division just invested in equipment to provide grease trap cleaning to all our commercial customers.

2023 was not a good year to brag about. Service was out focus with our great customers like Hannafords, Green Granite, all the local schools, Huggins Hospital, North Conway Memorial Hospital and all the nursing homes from Berlin to Ossipee. Plus we can’t forget our residential customers who kept us going strong. Hiring new help has not been good. Where did everyone go?

2024 ~ Started off slow, but by March were hiring personal to help keep up with demand. Ceramco renovation in Conway. White Mountain Hotal renovation. memorial Hospital in the works. This is an electio year, so hold on to your hat. Who knows how these politicians can screw up our great country even more. (Vote all the bums out). Let’s start fresh.

If you know anyone with potential and is looking for a career, send them our way for training and a career in the plumbing and heating trades. We need you.
